Robert Muldoon
Robert Muldoon was the 31st prime minister of New Zealand between 12 December 1975 - 26 July 1984. Throughout Muldoon's time as prime minister many controversial events in New Zealand society occurred one of these was the 1981 Springbok Tour. Muldoon had a similar belief to Cecil Blazey in that he did not think that politics should interfere with sport. By allowing the tour to go ahead Muldoon was accused of breaking the 1977 Gleneagles Agreement. Muldoon felt that it should be left up to the individual who was playing the sport to decide whether or not they wanted to play against representatives of Apartheid. He also argued that allowing the South African rugby team to tour did not mean supporting apartheid any more then playing a soviet union team meant supporting communism. Robert Muldoon was re-elected as prime minister after the Springbok Tour but lost to David Lange in the following election in 1984.
